Metallurgical Coke 

Coke or Met-Coke is a solid carbonaceous residue derived from metallurgical coal. The Metallurgical Coal is inserted in an oven and are heated without oxygen at temperatures high as 1,000 °C so that the fixed carbon and residual ash are fused together and most of the volatile constituents of the metallurgical coal are burnt off. Metallurgical coke is basic raw material for Iron and Steel industries, blast furnaces, sinter plants, and foundries is used as a fuel and as a reducing agent to reduce iron ore to iron

Commercially coke is produced by two method i.e
(i) by-product coke ovens, and (ii) non recovery coke ovens.
In Non-Recovery coke oven, when the heat energy of flue gases are recovered, they are known as heat recovery coke ovens or energy recovery coke ovens.

Coal Carbonization in Non-Recovery ovens

In Non – Recovery coke plants, the metallurgical coal is carbonized in horizontal oven chambers at high temperature & at negative oven pressure. The carbonization method takes place inside the oven from the top by radiation and from the bottom through the sole floor by conduction of heat.
For combustion of coal charge, primary air & secondary air is introduced into the oven chamber through several ports located in pusher side of the coke oven doors, the coke side doors of the oven and in the sole of the oven
Combusted gases produced during coal carbonization in a non-recovery coke oven are collected in a common tunnel and are exited via a chimney. This creates a natural draft in the coke oven.
The process is called Non-Recovery coke making as the by-product are not recovered .
The waste gases formed in the process is otherwise passed into the atmosphere. However, such waste gas has tremendous sensible heat in it and therefore can be used for generation of power by using waste heat recovery boiler and Steam – Turbine – Generator set. When waste heat is recovered, it is known as Heat recovery Coke oven or Heat recovery ( Non-recovery ) Coke oven.

Non – recovery coke ovens can produce a coke, which is large, strong, dense and abrasion resistant. The met- coke produced through Non-Recovery Coke oven have, low porosity, high temperature strength, superior Coke Strength After Reaction (CSR) and lower Coke Reactivity Index (CRI).These properties make non-recovery oven coke ideal for the optimum performance of the cupola or blast furnace. To obtain blast furnace coke, the type of coal is to be carefully selected.
